A routine childbirth turned fatal in Ore, Ondo State, after a 28-year-old pregnant woman reportedly died at an unlicensed medical facility, prompting the arrest of a couple accused of running the illegal clinic.
CityScenes Magazine gathered that operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have taken Kehinde Olawuyi and his wife, Eniola, into custody following the death of the expectant mother, identified simply as Iyanu. The incident occurred in Ore, within Odigbo Local Government Area.
According to police findings, the victim was admitted to the facility for delivery but complications arose during the procedure. Authorities allege that the clinic operators mishandled the process, leading to severe bleeding and loss of consciousness.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed that the command received a distress report from a resident of the Sabo area of Odigbo on January 18, 2026. The report accused the couple of operating an unauthorized medical centre at Orita, Ore.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had been admitted on January 4, 2026, for childbirth. When her condition deteriorated, she was rushed to another hospital for emergency care, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police further confirmed that the suspects are not licensed medical practitioners, and the clinic was operating outside the law. The facility has since been flagged as illegal as investigations continue.
Jimoh stated that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded, assuring residents that the command is committed to clamping down on unregistered health facilities across the state.
The incident has renewed concerns over the proliferation of illegal clinics and the risks they pose, particularly to pregnant women seeking affordable healthcare options.
