Abeokuta South Local Government on Friday, February 6, came alive with pomp, colour and cultural pride as residents joined the rest of Ogun State to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, with the Council Chairman, Hon. Balogun Olaniyi Afeez (BOA), using the occasion to spotlight his administration’s people-centred governance agenda.
The colourful cultural carnival and road show, which formed part of the Ogun @ 50 celebrations, cut across major streets of Abeokuta South, drawing cultural troupes, political leaders, community stakeholders and enthusiastic residents into a shared moment of unity and heritage.
The procession began at the Abeokuta South Local Government Secretariat and passed through Ake, Sapon and Omida before terminating at the Skating Ground, Panseke, where participants were treated to rich cultural displays, music and live performances that reflected the deep-rooted traditions of Ogun State.
Speaking at a reception held at the Skating Ground, Hon. Balogun described the carnival as both a celebration of Ogun State’s cultural legacy and a testament to the organisational capacity of Abeokuta South Local Government. He praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he termed purposeful and visionary leadership, noting that the state’s steady developmental trajectory remains commendable.
The council chairman disclosed that 2025 witnessed notable infrastructural interventions across Abeokuta South, assuring residents that the coming year would deliver even more impactful projects aimed at improving livelihoods and public welfare.
“Ogun State at 50 symbolises resilience, unity and progress. By the grace of God, we will celebrate its 60th, 70th and even 80th anniversaries,” Balogun said.
He explained that completed projects were only the foundation of a broader development blueprint, stressing that his administration remains committed to delivering tangible benefits at the grassroots.
“What we achieved last year is just the beginning. We have installed streetlights, rehabilitated public toilets and provided boreholes in major markets and communities. In 2026, we are expanding our reach with additional projects, including the rehabilitation of the Madojitimi–Asero Road,” he stated.
Reaffirming his governance philosophy of “Everyone Matters,” Hon. Balogun said policies and programmes under his leadership would continue to prioritise inclusiveness, welfare and the well-being of residents across the local government.
The celebration also had a political dimension, with the formal reception of popular broadcaster Ayinla Egba into the All Progressives Congress (APC), an event that drew applause from party faithful and guests.
Prominent personalities at the event included former and serving party leaders in Abeokuta South led by Chief Lemboye and Chief Henry Fagbenro; Hon. Olufemi Ilori; Hon. Wasiu Igbalaye, member representing Abeokuta South Constituency II; Hon. Lukmon Atobatele, member representing Abeokuta South Constituency I; Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of Sports; Rt. Hon.
