Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed profound grief over the passing of Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, the Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), describing his death as a significant loss to Ogun State and the wider Nigerian media industry.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun paid tribute to the late veteran broadcaster and former Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), noting that Akintunde’s contributions to sports journalism and broadcast administration were invaluable.
The Governor characterised the deceased as a distinguished and thoroughbred media professional whose managerial acumen and commitment to excellence stood him out throughout his career. According to Abiodun, Akintunde played a pivotal role in shaping sports broadcasting in Ogun State, leaving behind a legacy built on discipline, innovation, and professionalism.
He further observed that even while contending with serious health challenges, including kidney-related ailments, the late broadcaster remained steadfast, resourceful, and deeply devoted to his responsibilities at OGTV. Abiodun said such resilience underscored Akintunde’s unwavering dedication to the profession he loved.
“Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was an outstanding personality — pleasant to be with and completely dedicated to his job. He was a manager of managers, a mentor to many, and a shining light in journalism and sports reporting,” the Governor stated.
Describing his passing after a prolonged illness as the end of a remarkable era, Abiodun said the deceased earned widespread respect among colleagues and protégés for his warmth, humility, and commitment to nurturing young talents in the media industry.
The Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late broadcaster, his friends, associates, the management and staff of OGTV, and members of SWAN across the State. He prayed that Almighty Allah grant Akintunde Aljannah Firdaus and give his loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Akintunde’s death has continued to attract tributes from media practitioners and sports stakeholders who described him as a pillar of professionalism and a steady voice in Ogun’s broadcasting landscape.
