Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has condemned what he described as the reckless driving culture of some truck operators along the Sango–Ota corridor, following a fatal accident at the Ota Toll Gate that claimed seven lives.
The tragic crash involved a trailer tanker reportedly suffering brake failure. Six men and one woman lost their lives in the incident, while two others — a male and a female — sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment. A total of nine persons were involved.
Describing the development as painful and unacceptable, Governor Abiodun said the loss of innocent lives due to avoidable negligence was deeply disturbing. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for strength and comfort for them in this difficult time.
The Governor has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, insisting that anyone found culpable must face the full weight of the law.
He further called for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations by the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) to prevent a recurrence along the busy axis.
In a related development, the Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, visited the scene shortly after the incident alongside key council officials. He received briefings from security operatives coordinating rescue and traffic control operations.
The Chairman expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and reiterated the need for strict compliance with traffic laws. He also cautioned against roadside trading and other hazardous activities that expose residents and commuters to avoidable risks, assuring that the council would collaborate with relevant agencies to strengthen safety enforcement within the corridor.
The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying road safety measures and safeguarding lives and property across the State.
