In a country where social media thrives on sensationalism, it is unfortunate that some Nigerians chose to focus on a brief moment where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) missed his step during his official visit to Türkiye, rather than the monumental achievements of the trip itself. Anyone, regardless of age, status, or physical fitness, can momentarily lose balance. It is a human occurrence, not a measure of capacity, competence, or leadership.
What truly matters is not a fleeting physical slip, but the strong diplomatic, economic, educational, and military gains Nigeria secured from the visit.
President PBAT’s engagement with Türkiye was a strategic move that strengthened bilateral relations and positioned Nigeria for long-term growth across key sectors. The visit yielded several high-impact agreements that reflect seriousness of purpose and clear vision for national development.
Among the outcomes were:
- A Memorandum of Understanding on Diaspora Policy Cooperation between Türkiye’s Presidency of Turks Abroad and Related Communities and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission. A major step in harnessing the strength of Nigerians abroad for national development.
- An MoU in Media and Communication, opening doors for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and improved international media collaboration.
- Agreements on Higher Education and broader Educational Cooperation, which will enhance academic partnerships, research opportunities, and human capital development.
- A Halal Quality Infrastructure agreement between Türkiye’s Halal Accreditation Agency and Nigeria’s National Accreditation System, positioning Nigeria for growth in the global halal market, trade, and certification standards.
- The establishment of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), a platform that will deepen trade relations, attract investments, and remove bottlenecks to business cooperation.
- A Protocol on Military Cooperation, strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture through training, intelligence sharing, and defense collaboration.
- Cooperation between the Diplomatic Academies of both countries, improving the capacity of Nigeria’s foreign service officers in global diplomacy.
- An agreement between Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Nigeria’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs, focused on social development, gender empowerment, and family welfare.
These are not ceremonial documents. They are frameworks for economic expansion, security strengthening, youth development, women empowerment, and international competitiveness.
Yet, instead of engaging with the substance of these achievements, some chose to reduce a strategic diplomatic success to a short video clip. This culture of trivializing progress while amplifying minor moments is one of the reasons meaningful national conversations struggle to thrive in Nigeria.
Leadership is measured by vision, results, and the ability to secure opportunities for the future, not by a temporary misstep.
President PBAT’s Türkiye visit delivered tangible benefits that will impact education, trade, security, diplomacy, and social development for years to come. That is the real story Nigerians should be discussing.
Nations rise when citizens focus on progress, not pettiness.
And on substance, strategy, and national interest, this trip was undeniably a success.
