Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has honoured the memory of the late Lucia Onabanjo, describing her as a woman of deep faith, discipline and quiet strength whose influence resonated far beyond her immediate family.
The Governor spoke during the Funeral Mass held at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, where he pledged the State Government’s support for the completion of the cathedral project in recognition of her life and service.
Abiodun said the late matriarch exemplified humility and integrity, choosing a life away from public attention while earning widespread respect for her moral standards and steadfast devotion to family and community. He emphasised that her impact was rooted in character formation and ethical guidance rather than political office.
According to him, Mama Onabanjo’s life highlights the powerful role women play in sustaining leadership and shaping society through resilience, faith and principled living.
“In honour of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will partner with the church to complete this cathedral as a lasting memorial to her legacy,” the Governor stated, assuring stakeholders of the government’s commitment to timely intervention.
He also reflected on her unwavering support for her husband, Olabisi Onabanjo, particularly during difficult political periods, including his detention following the 1983 military coup. Abiodun noted that her composure and loyalty during those challenging moments underscored her strength of character.
In his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described the deceased as a silent but impactful contributor to both church and society, noting that her life of service and devotion would continue to inspire generations.
The Funeral Mass attracted prominent dignitaries, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers and political leaders from across Ogun State and beyond.
