The Media community in Ogun State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, former Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV) and past Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
Cityscenes Magazine gathered that the respected broadcaster died on Wednesday February 11 night after battling a prolonged illness, bringing to a close a distinguished career that left a lasting footprint on journalism and sports broadcasting in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, confirmed his passing in an official statement signed by its Secretary, Bunmi Adigun. The Union described Akintunde as a seasoned professional whose life was defined by service, integrity, and an enduring passion for journalism.
During his tenure as Director of Programmes at OGTV, Akintunde was instrumental in strengthening the station’s content structure and elevating broadcast standards. Industry colleagues told Cityscenes Magazine that he combined administrative leadership with editorial depth, ensuring that programming remained informative, engaging, and professionally delivered.
As a former SWAN Chairman, he also played a significant role in promoting ethical sports journalism and fostering unity among sports writers in the State. His analytical depth and command of sports reporting earned him recognition beyond Ogun State, positioning him as one of the respected voices in the field.
Associates recall that Akintunde remained devoted to journalism and sports until his final days, mentoring younger professionals and contributing his wealth of experience to the development of the media industry.
In its statement, the NUJ called on colleagues, friends, and well-wishers to pray for the repose of his soul and support his family in this period of grief. Burial arrangements, Cityscenes Magazine understands, will be announced by the family at a later date.
With his passing, Ogun State loses not only a broadcaster but a pillar of professionalism whose contributions will continue to resonate within Nigeria’s journalism and sports communities.
