The Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning to residents against roadside trading following a fatal accident at the Ota tollgate in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
The Government described indiscriminate street trading as a hazardous practice that significantly contributes to avoidable road crashes and loss of lives.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the accident scene on behalf of Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said trading along highways exposes residents to grave danger and increases their vulnerability during traffic incidents.
The recent crash at the busy tollgate reportedly claimed several lives and destroyed property, prompting renewed calls for strict compliance with safety regulations.
Salako-Oyedele emphasised that the State Government has invested in the provision of designated markets and stalls to create safer and more organised commercial spaces. She expressed concern that despite these provisions, some traders continue to operate along major roads.
“Accidents may not always be preventable, but our conduct can significantly reduce the risks and consequences. We strongly urge our people to desist from roadside trading for their own safety,” she stated.
Describing the tragedy as particularly painful given her personal ties to the community, the Deputy Governor conveyed the condolences of the State Government to the bereaved families. She assured that injured victims would receive appropriate medical attention while the Government intensifies measures to prevent a recurrence.
She also commended the prompt response of the Olota of Ota, Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege; officials of the Local Government Council; operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps; the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE); and transport unions for swiftly containing the aftermath of the crash.
In his remarks, the Olota of Ota condemned roadside trading, noting that repeated warnings against the practice had often been ignored. He said the loss of lives was regrettable and might have been avoided if safety advisories had been heeded, while offering prayers for the deceased and comfort for their families.
The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing public safety regulations and urged residents to utilise approved markets and designated trading centres across the State.
