Governor Dapo Abiodun on Thursday presented 40 Sport Utility Vehicles to traditional rulers in Ogun State, urging them to use their influence to promote peace, attract investors and support development in their communities.
The vehicles were distributed during the statutory meeting of the Ogun State Council of Obas held at the Oba’s Complex in Abeokuta.
While addressing the monarchs, the governor expressed concern over reports that some communities in Yewa South, Ipokia and Ijebu North had been hostile to investors seeking to establish businesses and projects in the state.
According to him, such actions could discourage major investments and negatively affect the state’s economy.
Abiodun said investors willing to commit billions of dollars to Ogun State should be welcomed because their investments would create jobs, improve infrastructure and enhance the standard of living of residents.
“We have received disturbing reports about the conduct of some communities during meetings with investors. This is unacceptable. These investors are bringing in huge capital that can transform our economy and create employment for our people,” the Governor said.
He urged traditional rulers to work closely with their people to ensure a peaceful and friendly atmosphere for businesses and investors.
The Governor stressed that development cannot thrive in an environment of hostility and distrust, adding that Ogun State must continue to position itself as one of the leading investment destinations in Nigeria.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s determination to protect investors and warned that any action capable of driving them away would not be tolerated.
On security, Abiodun called on residents and traditional institutions to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts to tackle insecurity across the country, he said local communities must continue to play their part in preserving peace in Ogun State.
The Governor also warned traditional rulers against indiscriminate land allocation and involvement in land disputes, describing land as one of the state’s most valuable assets.
“Our land is our oil. It must not be allocated carelessly. We must handle land matters responsibly if we want to continue attracting genuine investors,” he added.
He further cautioned landlords against renting houses or shops to criminals, warning that any building found to be used for illegal activities would be demolished.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hazmat, said the meeting, which was the first of the council in 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation between the government and traditional rulers on development and security issues.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, praised the governor’s developmental efforts and assured him of the support of traditional rulers for policies aimed at promoting growth and stability.
The distribution of the 40 SUVs was one of the major highlights of the meeting, with the vehicles expected to assist the monarchs in carrying out their official duties and community engagements.
