River Valley Estate in the Ojodu-Berger area of Ogun State was thrown into confusion early in the year following the horrifying death of a couple, Mr. Ayoola and Mrs. Ganiatu Ayanwale.
Residents of the estate, and relatives of the Ayanwales are still finding it difficult to understand the circumstances that led to the gory deaths of the deceased couple.
According to reports, the husband killed himself a day after killing his wife at their home.
Ganiatu was said to have been fatally stabbed by Ayoola on Thursday January 8 at their home in the estate during a domestic squabble.
The husband fled the scene after the horrifying act while sympathisers were attempting to save the Ganiatu. She was however pronounced dead by medics due to injuries inflicted on her by the husband.
Security agents and concerned residents then began
A manhunt was launched for the fleeing Ayoola. He remained incommunicado for a couple of days.
But on Friday January 9, Ayoola was found dead at Sotubo area of Ogun State. Eyewitness accounts explained that he committed suicide as a bottle of sniper was also found near the body. The Nigeria Police Force Ogun State Command through the Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, also confirmed the double tragedy.
Babaseyi said Ayoola was found gasping for breath in an open field in the Sotubo area of Ogun State. He was subsequently pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
DSP Babaseyi said preliminary findings suggest that the suspect may have taken his own life on January 9, 2026.
He also confirmed that two mobile phones, a voter’s card, and an ATM card, found where Mr Ayoola was discovered confirmed the deceased’s connection to the earlier murder case.
The Police also said the couple’s three children have been placed in the care of relatives.
He said a full investigation has been ordered by the commissioner of police .The case has therefore been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
