The Nigerian Army has finally confirmed that there was a plot to illegally scuttle the administration of President Bola Tinubu. According to Defence Headquarters, the indicted officers will now be made to face military judicial panels.
Samaila Uba, the spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, said this in a statement he personally signed. Earlier, 16 officers were being investigated for allegedly planning a coup, although the army denied, claiming instead that they were being investigated for “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”
According to widespread reports, the officers were arrested and detained over an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Tinubu.
Not even outcries from relatives of some of the detained officers could bring the military to say the truth about what happened. Fourteen of the 16 officers are from the Nigerian Army. The remaining two are from the Navy and the Air Force.
Major Gen. Uba said military investigation examined the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the officers and identified actions that were “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” stressing that the process was purely disciplinary and aimed at preserving internal discipline, cohesion and operational effectiveness
